Partial Sun



Like medium antirrhinum, flourishing

in the double bind of not enough light


and limited time in the rain—a head-

stone under a tree, or a milestone


they died too young to reach. A reason

for pause. A cause for concern. Burns


too bloody to hide, that hurt too much

to keep the different stories straight.


The rate of decay, its indifferent rays,

the quiet way she cradled their head


with her knees as they sat on the floor

watching the air move in the room


and cover the flowers / with hesitance
